KACCL Raise £18,000 for Children's Charity - Crowther Image

Kirklees and Calderdale Charity Lunch brings local businesses together to raise money for children and young people in need

The Kirklees and Calderdale Charity Lunch (KACCL) held their very first event in December 2016.  Over 240 guests attended The Cedar Court Hotel in Huddersfield for a glamorous charity lunch in the run up to Christmas last year. A grand total of £18,000 was raised for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. As Crowther Chartered Accountants were the main sponsors of the event, Sharon Ennis came to present a cheque to the organisers to thank them for their generosity.

The event was organised by a committee of local business representatives from the Kirklees and Calderdale area. Guests came from further afield to raise money for Kirklees-based charity, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice.

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice runs a state-of-art hospice in Huddersfield for children with life-shortening illnesses and their families. The hospice itself has excellent facilities; from a hydrotherapy pool to a music room, and plenty of space for children to play. They provide amazing support for all the family, whatever they need.  At the hospice, there are rooms for children to stay over, and parents to stay with them if necessary, knowing that their child will be properly looked after by the charity’s team of nurses and therapists. The care team also look after families in their own homes and are happy to help out, even if it’s just doing the ironing!

Forget Me Not relies almost entirely on charitable donations. The government provides less than 4% of the £4 million a year required to keep the hospice running. This means that fundraising at events such as KACCL can make a big difference to children’s lives.

As guests arrived, they were served a champagne reception courtesy of Asparagus Green. The main event was held in the Presidential Suite, where guests were served a fabulous three-course lunch. The starter was a beautifully-presented goat’s cheese salad, followed by a main course of oven-roasted beef fillet accompanied by pressed brisket, a selection of veggies and gravy (of course!). Dessert was a delicious chocolate brownie served with salted caramel ice cream. A real treat!

Steve and Michelle Crowther were joined on their table by clients Ravi and Sandeep Sharma (Pet Brands Limited), John and Catherine Cocking (JCA Limited), Andy Cummings and Simon George (6th Gear Experience) and Sue and Phil Morris (Morris Family Investments).

The Chairman of the KACCL Committee, Nadio Granata (Head of Marketing at Stafflex), gave a brief introduction to welcome guests. This was followed by a passionate speech by Peter Branson, Chief Executive at Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. Peter himself has experienced living with a child with long-term medical complications, and his speech was powerful and moving.

Guests had the pleasure of a performance from Musica Kirklees, before magician and entertainer John Danbury kicked off the charity auction. There was a selection of Luxury Eat and Sleep packages from local (and not so local!) restaurants and hotels, a tour of the Houses of Parliment with Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney, signed Manchester United memorabilia, tickets to both football (provided by Chadwick Lawrence) and rugby matches, Alexandra House Spa Experience, a mountain bike (provided by Rybrook Land Rover). Crowther clients 6th Gear Experience provided a voucher for their ‘Supercar Treble’ as an auction lot, which allows you to drive a choice of three supercars around a race track!

With the charity auction, ticket sales and raffle ticket sales, KACCL raised a grand total of £18,000 for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. This will truly make a difference to everyone at Forget Me Not, allowing them to continue to expand their mission to say ‘yes’ to more and more families and children that sadly need their services.

This year KACCL will be holding a second event, with proceeds again going to Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice as well as Orange Box, Halifax. Orange Box is a charity that provides a safe recreation space for children and young adults, as well as education courses and sports activities. This year’s event will again be held at the Cedar Court Hotel in Huddersfield on Thursday 7th December from 11 am. Tickets are priced at £50. For details on how to get involved in this year’s event or to purchase tickets, contact KACCL@crowther.accountants
