Not sure on something?
At Crowther Chartered Accountants, we have run a series of social and networking events over the past year, the latest of which allowed participants to show off their sporting prowess with a racket in hand. A range of professionals from the financial sectors along with a selection from our local business community came together at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club for a friendly competition.
The morning coincided with HTLSC’s Macmillan Coffee Morning, a fundraising event for Macmillan cancer nurses up and down the country. HLTSC’s members, along with a considerable donation from Steve Crowther, managed to raise a total of £840 through selling their homemade cakes.
The tennis was kicked off by HLTSC’s Head Coach Becky Lee, who split people off into doubles pairings. Sixteen pairs started the day, playing 20 minutes followed by 20 minutes rest. The winners of the first round were then grouped together to determine the overall winning pair for the day, and the remainder took part in play-offs for second, third and fourth places.
At Crowther, we have recently taken on two new members of staff, and the idea was to welcome them to the team and introduce them to contacts from companies such as HSBC, Barclays and Leonard Curtis.
David Busfield, who joined the Crowther team as Business Development Manager in August 2017, has previously worked for HSBC, so the tennis event was an amalgamation of new and old contacts. Our newest appointment, Accounts Manager Louise Hitchens, threw herself in at the deep-end, having never played tennis before! Louise was a little nervous at the start of the day, but soon came into her own on court and came off smiling and happy as she managed to win a few games with her partner, James Coyle from HSBC.
The day was not without drama, with Tim Grimshaw from HSBC dislocating a shoulder in the first round! Caterer Anthony Hegney from Asparagus Green saved the day by taking the injured party to Huddersfield A&E, conveniently not far from the tennis club!
After a long wait in the A&E Department, doctors were able to push Tim’s shoulder joint back into place. It’ll will be a while before he’s back at work and no doubt even longer before he picks up a tennis racket again! Get well soon Tim!
A surprising number of the participants were new to tennis; but the day was fairly relaxed and new players were paired alongside more experienced tennis enthusiasts. This made for a fair competition, ensuring that everyone got a good game. Smiling faces of the tennis newbies coming off court suggested that HLTSC may well have some new members!
While the players were on court, Asparagus Green Catering were busying away in the kitchen, and served up a fabulous tennis-themed antipasto lunch; beautifully presented charcuterie meats alongside a selection of cheeses, olives, peppers and freshly-baked breads. Players stopped for a snack between rounds and took the opportunity to network with other participants.
As the tennis drew to a close, more of Crowther Chartered Accountants’ staff, clients, friends and business contacts arrived for the awards presentation and the raffle prize draw.
Becky Lee presented the winners with their prizes:
Best Player: Jeremy Mills (Riley Dunn & Wilson)
Runner Up: Kristian Lee (Crowther Chartered Accountants)
Best Dressed: Anna Hay
Best Entertainer: Tim Grimshaw (HSBC)
The Crowther team had been selling raffle tickets throughout the day to raise money for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. They raised a grand total of £365 and the main prize was won by our very own payroll manager, Gemma Giles. Gemma won a selection of Yorkshire produce put together by Sally Busfield with items purchased at the Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival.
After a hard day of tennis, the attendees were ready for more food and a few drinks. While socialising and networking with other participants, they helped themselves to lamb tagine, again prepared by Asparagus Green Catering. The delicious Moroccan lamb stew was served alongside couscous and a selection of cold salads, and went down very well indeed!
Finally, we’d like to say a huge “Thank you,” to everybody who took part in the day, especially those who had never played tennis before! Well done to everyone who took part. Special thanks go out to Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and Asparagus Green Catering, who pulled out all the stops, as usual!
If you’d like to meet the Crowther team for a chat, or you’re looking for the next networking opportunities, we will be jointly organising Around Town Huddersfield’s networking event held at Rosenbauer UK on 19th October 2017. Crowther Chartered Accountants have also helped to organise the Kirklees and Calderdale Charity Lunch (KACCL) for the second year running. This year’s event will take place on 7th December 2017 and tickets are available now.
